Set in 1950s New York, the film follows two women from very different worlds who begin an unexpected love affair. Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a young department store clerk dreaming of a larger life. Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) is an elegant woman trapped in an unhappy marriage.
When the two meet, a quiet connection begins to grow. What starts as a simple encounter becomes a powerful bond that challenges the social rules of the time. As Carol begins to step away from her marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) questions her role as a mother. Her close friendship with Abby (Sarah Paulson) also comes under scrutiny.
Carol is a moving story about love, courage, and the cost of living honestly in a world that demands conformity.
