Every community is shaped by people whose work often takes place quietly and without recognition.
They are the firefighters and first responders who answer calls at all hours, the healthcare workers who care for local families, the veterans and active military members who have served their country, the police officers who protect their neighbors, and the teachers who guide and encourage the next generation.
On Wednesday, August 5, Bay Street Theater will welcome these individuals as our guests for the sixth annual Heroes Night, held during a performance of Dear Evan Hansen.
Each eligible community hero may reserve a pair of complimentary tickets while seats remain. The evening is made possible through the support of local businesses that have partnered with Bay Street to recognize the people who serve, protect, teach, care for, and strengthen the East End.
How Heroes Night Began
Heroes Night grew from a conversation about how Bay Street could create a signature community event with a clear and meaningful purpose.
“The idea came out of a brainstorming session we had at Bay Street,” said Paul Anthony Mongelluzzo, Director of Sponsorships at Bay Street Theater. “We wanted to have a signature event to highlight and showcase all the amazing local heroes that make the East End so unique and special. Heroes Night was born.”
What began as an idea has become an annual opportunity for Bay Street and its business partners to say thank you through a shared evening of live theater.
It also reflects the larger role a nonprofit theater can play within its community.
As the theatre publication HowlRound has observed, a theater can be “a resource to your community not only for entertainment but for catharsis, education, and perspective.”
Heroes Night puts that idea into practice by opening our doors to people who spend so much of their time serving others.
This year’s performance of Dear Evan Hansen provides a particularly meaningful setting for Heroes Night.
The Tony Award-winning musical explores connection, belonging, and the importance of feeling seen. Presented in Bay Street Theater’s intimate space, this reimagined production offers audiences an especially personal experience with its deeply human story.
Those themes have a natural connection to Heroes Night.
Many of the people being honored devote their working lives to seeing and responding to the needs of others. For one evening, Bay Street and the surrounding community have an opportunity to see them in return.
Research from the National Endowment for the Arts has also identified a relationship between arts participation and broader forms of social and civic engagement. Theaters do more than present performances. They create places where people can gather, connect, reflect, and share an experience with their neighbors.
An evening at the theater cannot remove the pressures carried by a first responder, healthcare worker, teacher, police officer, veteran, or member of the military.
It can, however, offer a few hours of connection, entertainment, reflection, and enjoyment.
It can also deliver a message that is both simple and important:
Your work matters, and your community appreciates you.

“We have an array of unique sponsorships for local businesses to support,” Mongelluzzo said. “The programs are all very affordable and effective for our local partners. All of our sponsorship programs support the important work of our regional theater and ultimately the communities on the East End.”

Attending Heroes Night
Bay Street Theater’s sixth annual Heroes Night will take place Wednesday, August 5, during Dear Evan Hansen.
Veterans, active military members, first responders, police officers, firefighters, nurses, healthcare workers, teachers, and other community heroes are invited to attend as Bay Street Theater’s guests.
A pair of complimentary tickets is available to each eligible hero while seats remain.
