Bob and Jean: A Love Story

by Robert Schenkkan

Co-Production with Arizona Theatre Company

Director: Matt Austin

Contract Dates: May 22-June 15, 2025

Bob- Male, 25.  The Narrator’s father in 1942.  Young Leading Man.  College graduate with a burning interest in theatre.   Despite aspirations in the arts, when WWII starts, he joins the navy as a bomb disposal officer.  His journey through the Pacific takes him from an attitude of elitism to universal compassion.  His letters to Jean are filled with elevated language that he speaks with musicality, lyricism, vulnerability and deep emotion. This role is cast. Seeking future replacements.

Jean- Female, 22.  Ingenue.  The Narrator’s mother in 1942.   An idealist and optimist whose insatiable curiosity allows her to see the best in people.  An aspiring actress with enough talent to work steadily but not break through to the stardom she aspires to.  Her letters are filled with genuine inquiry without judgement and an elevated sense of style and language the way only a 1940’s actor speaks. This role is cast. Seeking future replacements.

Narrator- Late 50s-late 60s.  Bob and Jean’s grown son who now has grown children of his own.  A professional writer of endless curiosity and speculation.  Easily amused and able to find the humor, irony and drama of his parent’s young, passionate, sometimes bumbling courtship.  His examination of his parents love letters takes him on a full emotional journey of surprise, humor and emotion.

DECEIVED

Adapted by Johnna Wright and Patty Jamieson

Based on Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight

Director: Sheryl Kaller

Contract Dates: May 29-July 20, 2025

BELLA – A young married woman, about 25, with possibly a nervous disposition. Bella loves and trusts her husband and only begins to doubt his sincerity when circumstances force her to do so. As the story progresses, she must accept a new reality and find a strength – and cunning – she didn’t know she had.

JACK – Her husband, 35-40, debonair and charming. Jack is the most loving, sympathetic and supportive partner he could possibly be, or so it seems for most of the play.

ELIZABETH – The housekeeper, 50s-60s, hard of hearing. A lifetime “in service” has taught her to remain as dutiful and discreet as possible, and to keep her opinions to herself except in extreme circumstances.

NANCY – The young housemaid, her eye on the main chance. Smart and perceptive, she thinks she sees an opportunity to outsmart everyone.
