Hamptons Take 2 Film Festival presents: The Rape of Recy Taylor

91 min, Q/A with Nancy Buirski

DIRECTOR: Nancy Buirski
PRODUCERS: Nancy Buirski, Beth Hubbard, Susan Margolin, Claire L. Chandler
EDITOR: Anthony Ripoli
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Rex Miller

Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice.

The film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. An attempted rape against Parks was but one inspiration for her ongoing work to find justice for countless women like Taylor. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result, not a beginning.

Nancy Buirski is the Director/Producer/Writer of By Sidney Lumet, Afternoon of a Faun and The Loving Story (the Oscar shortlisted, Peabody and Emmy Award-winning film). She is directing Endangered, an animated feature based on Eliot Schrefer’s Young Adult novel. Buirski is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences. She founded and ran the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
