It takes the Players two years to develop a new play but the creative progress of the troupe is constantly amazing. Some 31 years ago when the EESP was formed to serve our local learning challenged citizens, they performed only in mime. But thanks to the skills of artistic director, Jacqui Leader, the players learned to speak lines soon taking on such challenges as Moliere, an ancient Celtic myth, Cyrano de Bergerac and tableaux vivant.
Then, unprecedented, they began to write the plays themselves using their own lives, loves and dreams as dramatic and comedic fodder. Downs-syndrome does not negate the desire to become a nightclub chanteuse; IQ levels do not dampen love and desire; and mental challenges of all stripes can lead to great insights on the human condition.
With this latest play Trouble in Jamaica, the Players have reached yet another plateau as it marks the first time The Players have written a completely fictional text. Every line, every vignette is the result of a narrative collaboration amongst the troupe. It is a colorful, hilarious and nuanced exercise, taking place in a downbeat apartment building somewhere in Jamaica, Queens where extremely ribald characters appear.
Like every other artistic group, the EESP needs support from the community to keep the gates open. We have been largely cut from municipal funding and few programs for the learning challenged are in place on the East End. And yet The Players persevere with increasing tenacity thanks to the support of their audience. They perform in schools and theater venues throughout the East End, and last year performed to an SRO audience at the French Institute in New York City.
The premier performance of Trouble In Jamaica on December 10 at Bay Street Theater will be a benefit with a silent and Dutch auction to raise the funds to proceed. A food and wine reception thanks to Channing Daughters Wines and renowned chef Marie-Eve Berty will start at 5 p.m. followed by the play and champagne infused auction.
December 10 – 5 p.m. Tickets starting at $30. Bay Street Theater, Sag Harbor. Tickets available on line (eastendspecialplayers. com) or via the Box office etc etc
